With the start and continuation of my journey as a Performance 'Designer' , I have come to a clear understanding of that my values, ethics and interests make are the building blocks to the aesthetic of my practice. I found that the answer to finding my flair is being open to constant play, experimentation and to establish or demolish and the best way to develop in my practice is through exploration. In the starting of my film course, I took up video editing which made me look at things differently, similarly after studying and practicing Scenography - I know that even If I had to write a script now for example, this new Scenographic perspective will let me add something unique vision to, opening new ways to look at things.
Looking closely at my practice I some Underlying arches that helped me put a finger on themes that interest me and my values as a designer. I noticed my transformation from the start of the course the openness to explore art with a sense of play and experimentation. Throughout this one year, I can see that I have an interest for engaging audiences through sound or the want to explore gustation or olfaction; the more unconventional senses in a performance.
I am interested in how Scenographic storytelling can be translated by audience and it's variations. I also seek to practice ways to go about narrative telling and the use of design in asynchronous coordination to convey a narrative without being too direct about it.
I noticed patterns that I am very interested in shifts and Gaps; or Juxtaposition in relation to themes
Gaps between Synchronous and Asynchronous coordination. Gaps between what is seen and what is heard. Gaps between what is expected of a object or space and showcasing the unexpected experience.
The shift and from Dystopia, Reality and Utopia or standing on the boundaries of speculative design, is another recurring theme in all my performances as in the case of 'The final supper' or 'A world in glacial memory' is speculative design as the idea of other realities existing with us or only the existence of these realities could make one think of political, social, environmental or cultural issues even. The exploration of sound design in the performances mentioned earlier, as well as the 'Pencil Performance' and to see the world with it' sounds.
I also find interesting Juxtaposition in relation to - Play on Scale.
In terms of medium, I want to explore the multidisciplinary scope of scenography to work across disciplines, such as science or technology. I want to work to see how different mediums layer and how they interact.
The below Illustrations illustrate design that I find Interesting in relation to scale.
I also found through my learning little things for example - The sound of a sequin embellished dress for example makes me really uncomfortable because I remember being forced to wear pokey-sequined dresses for Indian weddings as a child and even the sound of heavily embellished dresses makes me feel claustrophobic, and by discovering the smaller things I learn to construct my identity as a designer. Within this year, I was also able to tell where some of my past works fall in terms to scenography.
With my Experience living in the UK as international student, not only did I realize the variety of experiences available to the general public here.
Along with my study of experiences and design for experiences, it made me think how not just India, but how every other country unique to their own could provide the smallest interventions or the biggest experience to common man in a way that is affordable to all, with the resources and spaces locally sourceable in that country. As much as I want to work commercially, I also want to create such interventions/ performances globally in the future.
This 1 year of experimentation has made me do a-lot more than just design under a prompt, it has taught we to work tacitly but at the same time to design intentionally.
Scenography and Design established itself to me over a year as something deeply embedded in and around us and has made me see the creative potential and possibilities around us, regardless of Geography, demographics or culture.
My Realization on the importance of a 'performance designer' role is my biggest reflection.
